Photoshop effect – Create mask effect on face

In this Photoshop example, we will see how to create mask effect on the face.

Let’s open below image in Photoshop application.

Use magic wand tool to select the face as shown below.

In magic wand tool, we can find Refine edge in Option bar. We will use Refine Edge to smoothen the edges. Let's set the parameter for Refine edge as shown below:

Now, right click on the selection and select Layer via copy:

To get the best result for Blend mode = color burn, we should desaturate the image. When we apply color burn on desaturated image, it gives great overlayed color. In this case, we will apply color of a flag over the face using color burn. So, let's desaturate it first.

On the layer panel, click on layer adjustment icon. Then select hue/saturation. Desaturate the face completely as shown below. Below is the settings in Hue/Saturation panel.

Merge down the Hue/Saturation to the selected face. To do this right click on Hue/Saturation and select Merge Down.

Right click on the tricolor and select Clipping Mask. Below is how the flag is clipped to fit the face.

Now change the Blend mode to Color burn. See below.

Use Smudge tool and drag on Red color over yellow around Nose area and other places where is Red meets yellow. Below is the final output:
